James D. Burrus Elementary

Announcements

Welcome

Jesse Woods, Burrus Elementary Principal Let me take this time to welcome our Parents, Guardians, Business Partners and Community Leaders back to the HISD 2010-2011 school year. I would also like to welcome you back to a 2009- 2010 “Exemplary School Year” and a Federally Mandated AYP Passing School for the “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND.” Finally, I would like to take this time to announce to the entire Parent Body, Burrus Faculty and Staff, the Independent Heights Community and the City of Houston that on September 09, 2010 at 10:00a.m.  The United States Secretary of Education in Washington D.C. Mr. Arne Duncan made an official announcement that Burrus Elementary was selected as a “National Blue Ribbon School”. The award was given to our school for the outstanding growth in academics and most improved for achievement in closing the educational gap. This is the highest honor which can be bestowed on any school in the United States. The honor was given to four other schools in the HISD as well.

We are proud to share this honor with Oak Forest Elementary, Briarmeadow Middle School, Cornelius Elementary and Johnston Middle School. There were twenty –five schools selected in our great state of Texas and 304 throughout the United States.  A special team will be going to Washington D.C. on November 14, 15 and 16 in order to receive the Blue Ribbon Plaque and Flag from the Secretary of Education of the United States of America.  We could not have done this without your continued support and belief in our work here at Burrus Elementary Fine Arts Magnet. -Kudos

A special thanks to our fourth grade parents for a 99% return rate of your children back to Burrus Elementaty Fine Arts Magnet School. We had 60 Third Graders to return to Burrus this year from last year!

Most of these students have been here since Pre-K and K.
