      Winter is almost gone, and with the arrival of the warm Spring days comes the annual testing season in Texas schools. All year, students have been working very hard with their instructors to learn the state mandated curriculum and show how much progress has been made on the academic path. However, as seasons change, so do educational methods and the tools of assessment schools use to measure effectiveness. With the arrival of the testing season comes a new assessment, the STAAR test.

   The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test is the state's new assessment tool. The STAAR replaces the TAKS tests that had been administered since 2003. With an increased focus on rigor in the public school curriculum, and greater demands on the quality of students sent from public schools to college and the workforce, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) mandated an end to the TAKS test in 2007. Over the period since then, a greater emphasis has been placed on increasing the complexity and depth of the subjects being taught in schools, and the STAAR test is designed to give a clearer picture of student academic readiness for college and the workforce. To that end, the STAAR test is the most rigorous test administered to all students in the state.
